- Light scuff sand. Not heavy sanding, just enough to break the gloss.
- Inspect for loose nails or paneling. Re-nail or secure any sections that shift.
- Fill nail holes and caulk vertical seams if the panels are secure.We don’t usually caulk grooves because it often cracks later if the paneling flexes.
- Use a high-quality oil-based primer.
- Zinsser Cover Stain is our go-to for blocking smoke, stains, and wood tannins.
- Zinsser Low-Odor Oil Primer is great if you’re worried about smells.
- Topcoat with quality paint.
- We used Benjamin Moore Regal Select for a smooth, rich finish.
And yes—the grooves are still slightly visible. That’s normal unless you want to go full drywall mode (which is a whole different beast).
