Painting Over Wood Paneling

Can I Paint over Paneling?

Painting Over Wood Paneling

(Because if your walls are stuck in the ’70s, it’s time to rock a new look.)

Can You Paint Over Wood Paneling? Heck Yes—But…

You absolutely can paint over wood paneling—and we do it often in homes all across Elgin, Crystal Lake, and St. Charles. But here’s the catch: if you don’t prep it right, your paint job will look worse than a Bee Gees cover band at a biker bar.

Our Real-World Method

We recently tackled a room where dark wood paneling covered every wall. We gave it a fresh, modern update using this simple but effective process:

Step-by-step:

  1. Clean the paneling thoroughly. Degreaser if needed.
  2. Light scuff sand. Not heavy sanding, just enough to break the gloss.
  3. Inspect for loose nails or paneling. Re-nail or secure any sections that shift.
  4. Fill nail holes and caulk vertical seams if the panels are secure. We don’t usually caulk grooves because it often cracks later if the paneling flexes.
  5. Use a high-quality oil-based primer.
    • Zinsser Cover Stain is our go-to for blocking smoke, stains, and wood tannins.
    • Zinsser Low-Odor Oil Primer is great if you’re worried about smells.
  6. Topcoat with quality paint.
    • We used Benjamin Moore Regal Select for a smooth, rich finish.

And yes—the grooves are still slightly visible. That’s normal unless you want to go full drywall mode (which is a whole different beast).

FAQ: Painting Over Wood Paneling

Do I have to sand the paneling? A light scuff sand is best. Skip it, and your paint may not stick.

Can I use latex primer instead of oil? You can, but oil-based primers do a much better job sealing in stains and tannins.

Will the paneling grooves disappear? Nope! Unless you fill them with spackle or caulk (which can crack over time), they’ll still show.

Can I wallpaper over painted paneling later? Absolutely. And actually—we just did wallpaper in this same room. Want to know how? Click here to see how we wallpapered over paneling.

What if the paneling smells like smoke or has stains? Oil primer like Zinsser Cover Stain will seal it in so it doesn’t bleed through.

Should I just replace the paneling instead? You can, but painting is quicker, more affordable, and gives great results with the right prep.
