Front Door Colors with Dark Gray Siding

Picking colors is something I struggle with. I get anxious. I do not want to pick a color that will look bad. I don’t want to have to paint it again because the color I picked I do not like. Sound Familiar? Making it worse is when it is the outside of the house! Everyone sees the color you picked! We get the shock from people what do you mean you don’t pick colors? Being a paint contractor does not mean we are color experts!

Color selection is more than surrounding colors. We turn to designers to help our customers pick colors because they are impartial, they have seen thousands of applications to have the experience to see and know what works where.

So from the perspective of a paint contractor, here are the colors we have applied to front doors for 2024. We we are in the Chicago Suburbs, it is fun to see the differences in Neighborhoods from Woodstock, Barrington, Barlett, Elgin, St. Charles and Geneva. Every town seems to have its style- or rules for color.

So every siding color has its own struggles. Dark gray siding seems to be the hardest due to undertones of other color. Picking an accent color can be tricky. Black Front Door

Black can be tricky. You would not think so. We learned this lesson when we were trying to pick a color for our house. We picked several black colors and saw (after painting them) that black can show tones of purple, blue, green, and purple! ( I like Tricorn black myself)

White Front Doors

White doors are by far the most popular color we apply. Simply white and Pure white are the most common color selections, but 99% of the time we just use stock white from Sherwin Williams.

Pink Front door color

Pink? Yep.. We are still choosing our final, one is too dark, one is too blue, one it s too purple. So we are on color number 4 ourselves, I think we have the final one.. and will update this when we have it. But we are seeing pink in many areas and homes, it does play well with White houses, BKue houses, as well as Black houses.

Teal front doors- I really like. I tried to do it for our house, but the teal colors just clashed with the gray color we have on our house and shutters. So I will have to admire other people’s colors instead.

Red front doors

Red front doors are HUGE! Very popular for sure. I do like the red front door colors. Man do they make a pop.

Yellow front door

Yellow? Yep.. we did it ourselves to one of our doors. We matched the color yellow from the wrap we did with our work vehicles. Was not 100% sure but int he end it turned out pretty cool!

Issues with Front door painting

Kind of odd, but- there are some common problems with painting front doors.

It should be simple, paint the door- NOT!

Each door is unique. What was it made from? Metal doors use different primers than fiberglass. Doors that have plastic or vinyl are restricted with the colors that can be used.

We found out the hard way- Screen doors kind of are a problem when it goes to seeing the color you painted! The dark screen affects the color when you look at the house. (kind of looks awful if you pick a bright color)

How to prepare a door to paint it

Lets do this quick and easy…

• You have to clean the door
• mask the area you are painting
• use a light scuff pad to help the paint adhere better
• use a primer- some colors need a tinted primer to get the best representation of the final color
• we use micro fibre rollers to apply the paint
• allow plenty of time to dry before closing the door!

Does it matter what kind of paint to use for a front door?

When you are selecting a Paint for your front door, don’t go cheap! I am not a fan of Behr, but that is me. I like Sherwin Williams exterior products and Benjamin Moore Exterior products. We have found if you like a Benjamin Moore color- use their paint. Same for Sherwin Williams- each product uses different tints, so final color can vary.
