Wallpaper installs shouldn’t feel like a Seinfeld episode—staring at dark spots and streaks, wondering, “What’s the deal with this paper?” At D’Franco Painting & Wallpaper, we just tackled a Northbrook powder room with Candace Olsen by Kravit wallpaper, and it’s giving us Kramer-level chaos—blotching, discoloration, and a washability fail. Here’s the troubleshoot breakdown—spoiler: it’s not us, it’s the roll!

The Setup: A Powder Room Puzzle

  • The Job: Installed this chic Candace Olsen paper (Kravit label, paste-the-wall, wipeable) in a Northbrook powder room—28” wide strips, Roman 234 clear adhesive, brush-only smoothing. Anthony nailed it a week ago—time lapse coming!
  • The Call: Days later, the client flags dark splotches and seam streaks—above the sink, corners, everywhere. No soap, no water—just paste-the-wall vibes. What gives?

The Test: Sponge vs. Paper (Spoiler: Paper Loses)

  • Off the Roll: Looks fine—parchment-like tone, subtle variation.
  • Wet Sponge: Hit a scrap with warm water—dark spots stay dark, whole area darkens, dries streaky.
  • Adhesive Smear: Rubbed a dab of Roman 234 on, wiped with a clean sponge—shiny, dark stain sticks. Diluted gel diff (1 drop/gallon)? No dice—permanent mark!
  • Seam Check: On-site, every seam’s darker—wiped countertop left spots too. Instructions say “wipe with clean water and sponge”—we did, post-panel, fresh water each time. Still a fail!

Why It’s a Bust: Kravit’s Paper, Not Our Prep

  • Theory: Brush didn’t burnish (no smoother used), adhesive didn’t splash (paste-the-wall), yet seams and wipes stain. Second time with this paper—lighter color last time, less bad, still off.
  • Sink Risk: Over a towel bar—if soap or water hits, will it ruin it? Instructions say washable—we say nope. Kravit’s unresponsive—vid sent, answers pending.
  • Dave’s Take: “I wouldn’t install this again—unless it’s silk, a damp cloth should work. It’s not worth the pain for your room!”

Why D’Franco’s Still Your Wallpaper MVP

We charge $80 hour. Wallpaper installers are hard to find and harder to train.

Figure about $680/day minimum.

Powder rooms? PLan on One day ($680) unless obstacles bump it higher. Our vetted crew tests every roll—free touch-ups within a year if seams lift (not here—paper’s fault!), free consults to pick better stock. A Woodstock client dodged this—swapped for a solid pick, saved the vibe. Kravit update coming—stay tuned!
