Why Zinsser Outperfoms PVA Primer

A Blog post written out fo frustration! Are you looking at torn, damaged drywall in your home? Are you trying to figure out how to bring it back to a smooth, paint-ready surface without breaking the bank? Repairing drywall that’s suffered from old glue, bubbling, or flaking paper is a pain, time consuming nad messt! But Fear not! We show how the right primer can make all the difference between a frustrating, time-consuming project and a successful, long-lasting finish. In this post, we’re comparing two options—PVA Primer and Zinsser Gardz—and showing you Why Gardz Outperforms PVA Primer is the go-to choice for severely damaged drywall.

The Problem: Old Paneling Glue and Torn Paper

Sometimes, a room or wall can’t accommodate brand-new drywall installation—maybe it’s a finished basement where full replacement isn’t practical, or it’s a quick fix for a home improvement timeline.

When leftover glue from old paneling or wallpaper tears off drywall paper, you’re left with an ugly, unsightly, uneven, weakened surface. The challenge is finding a way to seal and make that surface a solid and uniform so you can skim coat and paint without running into flakes, bubbles, or peeling.

Primer Showdown (PVA Primer vs. Zinsser Gardz)

  1. PVA Primer
    • Basic Sealer: Commonly used for new drywall or light touch-ups, it seals the surface enough for paint but doesn’t deeply penetrate or reinforce compromised areas. Typically you will see bubbles when applying pvs primer.
    • Limited Adhesion: If you sand or skim coat over a PVA-primed surface that’s already weakened, you may see flaking or peeling over time.
  2. Zinsser Gardz
    • Deep Penetration: Gardz works like a glue in some ways, it is actually more permable that water so it can pentrate into the drywall paper and bind loose paper in damaged areas.
    • Stronger Surface: Once cured, it provides a durable base that prevents bubbling and peeling when you apply joint compound or paint.
    • Faster Dry Time: It dries relatively quickly, helping you move on to the next steps—like skim coating—sooner.

If your walls are truly damaged, Zinsser Gardz is designed specifically for “problem surfaces,” delivering better results and saving you the headache of constant repairs.

Step-by-Step: How to Repair and Prime Damaged Drywall

  1. Assess the Damage: Identify torn paper, areas where the drywall core is exposed, and any bubbles or flaking.
  2. Remove Loose Material: Gently scrape away the big peeling paper areas, dont worry about al of the little pieces, but for sure scrape as much leftover adhesive to create the smoothest possible base.
  3. Apply Zinsser Gardz: Follow the instructions on the can. Use a brush or roller to coat the entire damaged area, and let it soak in, penetrate and dry for the recommended time.

  1. Allow to Dry Thoroughly: This ensures the primer forms a solid bond and stabilizes the surface.
  2. Skim Coat (If Needed): Use joint compound to fill in torn or uneven sections. The sealed surface helps the compound adhere more effectively. You can use pre mix, or the powder you mix your self
  3. Sand Lightly & Reprime if Necessary: After the skim coat dries, sand any rough spots and apply another coat of Gardz if you notice any new areas needing extra sealing.
  4. Paint Your Walls: Now you’re ready to paint! Choose a quality paint, and enjoy the smooth finish you’ve achieved.

Gilberts Basement Drywall Rescue

We a have a house in Hunltey, depending on the GPS, it also shows as Gilberts. This basement had wood paneling from the 70’s.

wall damage from pannling removal

When we pulled down the paneling, parts of the paneling came off, some glue stayed and large patches of the drywall paper came with it—leaving behind a fuzzy, uneven mess. I would have liked to just started replacing entire sections of drywall, but the way the other rooms, stairs were finished, new drywall was not an option.

So as per the video, we started to apply the walls so we could seal the damage areas with Gardz. We have done this hunreds of times, usually after removing wallpaper, 1s time with paneling. Once the Guardz is dry, the surface is rock-solid, so we could sand the surface, start to skim skim coat, sand, and then paint.

The result?

Smooth walls, no peeling edges, and a fraction of the cost and time compared to a full replacement.
